런던 토튼함 코트에서, 강정마을 해군기지 반대 및 보이콧 삼성 집회가 열립니다.

The South Korean government has tried to build the military base on Gangjeong, Jeju Island since 2007.  In relation to this, it seems apparent that there are at least four issues.

First of all, this is the issue of peace.  This military base has been built because of the insistence of the US military in order to expand their military influence to the Asia-Pacific region.  Particularly, it is important to note that the naval base is not for against the direct national security threat from North Korea, but against the considerably abstract national security threat from the Asia-Pacific area, such as China.  In this situation, the navy base will host US military missile ‘defence’ systems with nuclear capability.  Thus, it is clear that the navy base will be a huge threat to peace in the region. 

Secondly, this is the environmental issue.  Jeju Island is one of the most beautiful place on earth, home to three UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites and nine UNESCO Geo-Parts.  So, Juju Island has been officially designated ‘Peace Island’.  However, the South Korean Navy and Samsung, the main contractor to build the controversial naval base, have been destroying the beautiful coast and marine environment around the village of Gangjeong.

Thirdly, this is the issue of democracy.  Even though 94 per cent of the village electorate voted against the base, the government and Samsung have been going ahead as they planned.

Lastly, this has led to the human rights issues.  Peaceful protest from the villagers and the domestic and international solidarity has been met with violence and over 420 protestors have been arrested.  Samsung is believed to be paying the thugs who intimidate and assault the protestors.  One of these thugs recently attacked 71 year old Catholic Priest Father Moon, recipient of the 2012 5:18 Peace Prize.

In this situation, the UK solidarity team against constructing the nave base made a peaceful and fantastic demonstration at the South Korean embassy in London on 9th of May 2012.  Approximately 60 international people participated in the demonstration.  You can check the demonstration through the followings.

In this time, the UK solidarity team is organising ‘Boycott Samsung Demonstration’ (outside the Samsung store 20-21 Tottenham Court Road, Sat 9 June 14.30-17.00).  This is because a global call to boycott Samsung has been called for until they stop construction of the naval base on Jeju Island.  In this respect, if you are able to inform your dedicated members and to join the demonstration, it would be absolutely helpful to stop the issues of peace, environment, democracy and human rights.
