Author Dr Kim Hong-hee and editor Michele Robecchi will be in conversation with scholar and curator Uta Meta Bauer, critic and theorist Rita, and featured artists Ayoung Kim and Meekyoung Shin.
Renowned curator and scholar Dr Kim Hong-hee’s book is the first to delve into Korean feminist artists’ impact on the East Asian cultural landscape. This unprecedented visual survey celebrates the work of 42 contemporary artists, from globally recognized names to rising stars, including Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Yun Suknam, Kimsooja, Lee Bul, Minouk Lim, Kyungah Ham, Meekyoung Shin, Haegue Yang, Mire Lee, and Ayoung Kim. Organized by themes including femininity, body, queer politics, ecofeminism, nomadism, and the diaspora, Korean Feminist Artists features artworks across painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, installation, performance, and handicrafts. Through rich imagery and insightful writing, the book explores the quest of these pioneering artists for social, cultural, and sexual equality, from their confrontations with the mainstream art establishment to the significance of their aesthetic and political interventions.
This event is organised by Phaidon Press and the Warburg Institute and supported by the Korea Arts Management Service.
